Retreatment

Occasionally a tooth may not heal as expected after initial treatment due to a persistent or recurrent infection. Retreatment can offer a second chance to save a diseased root filled tooth that would otherwise be extracted. The previous root filling is removed and the root canals are disinfected and re-sealed.

Endodontic retreatment is a more specialised procedure requiring high magnification and advanced techniques to achieve the best outcome. Endodontists have additional training and considerable experience in performing retreatment.

Endodontic Microsurgery

Often called an apicectomy, this procedure involves removal of diseased tissue around the tip of the tooth root (i.e. apex) using microsurgical techniques. The tip of the root is also removed and a small filling placed at the root-end to seal the root canal. This form of treatment may be necessary when infection persists following root canal treatment, or if it is not possible to seal the root tip with a conventional root filling. Microsurgery can often save a tooth that would otherwise be destined for extraction.

Endodontist FAQs

What is root canal treatment?
The endodontist removes the infected dental pulp, and then carefully cleans, disinfects, and shapes the pulp space (root canals). The root canals are then filled and sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. Following root canal treatment your general dentist will place a permanent restoration (often a crown) to protect and restore the tooth to normal function.
Why see an endodontist for your root canal problems?
When it comes to all your complex endodontic needs, such as root canal treatment, we choose to provide you with optimal care from our general dentists and registered specialist endodontists.

Endodontists are specialists in diagnosing and treating the pain caused by toothaches, damaged or diseased teeth. They hold a degree in general dentistry as well as a postgraduate degree in endodontics. The latter involves a further three to four years of advanced education specific to endodontics.

While some general dentists can perform root canal therapy, additional specialist training and experience go a long way towards increasing the likelihood of treatment success in this field. Furthermore, their treatment planning is more thorough and equipped with more advanced techniques and technologies such as CBCT, microscope and etc. Treatment under microscope has been proven to minimize the chance of overlooking some small cracks, additional canals and other features, which in turn enhancing the likelihood of successful treatment.
How long does a root canal take?
The length of a root canal treatment can vary depending on the root canal specialist, complexity of the tooth’s structure and the specific condition of the tooth. Generally, a root canal can be completed in one to two appointments, each lasting about 60 to 90 minutes.

Simple cases might be resolved in a single visit, while more complex cases, such as those involving molars or re-treatments, might require additional time or sessions.

After the root canal treatment, a separate appointment is often scheduled for a crown or other restoration to protect the treated tooth and restore it to full function.
How will I feel after my treatment?
It is absolutely normal to experience some degree of discomfort after root canal procedure. Usually it resolved within a couple days and you may need to take anti- inflammatory medication for a couple of days.

Very rarely you may have pain or swelling, when antibiotics prescription will be required.
